Hiking:
Hikers with any level of experience can enjoy the sport on any of the three major
trails that span the area.
- The
Appalachian Trail runs through the area on its way from Maine to Georgia.
The trail is identified by white swatches on trees, signs and other permanent
structures. The trail can be accessed at several spots: on Freezeland Road near
Linden (only within a mile of the Hot Tub Heaven Chalets!
Trails maps provided!); just off John Marshall Highway in Fauquier
County; and on Fort Valley Road on the Warren/Shenandoah county line.
- The
Tuscarora Trail, formerly the Big Blue Trail because of the blue swatches
that mark the course, originates near Matthew's Arm Campground in the Shenandoah
National Park and descends to cross the South Fork of the Shenandoah River at
the Bentonville low-water bridge. It then follows county roads, one of which was
built by George Washington's Army Corps of Engineers during the Revolutionary
War. The trail ascends Massanutten Mountain into Shenandoah County. Ultimately
the Tuscarora meets up with the C&O Canal Trail in Cumberland, MD.
- Skyline
Drive and the Shenandoah National Park, a 195,000-acre park combines protected
mountain land with trails and beautiful views. The park's trails, varying from
short walks to 12-hour hikes, intersect with waterfalls, streams, old home sites
and scenic vistas. Wildflowers, more than 205 species of birds, white-tailed deer
and black bear abound. (Trail maps provided at the Chalets
for your use - please return.)
